Converting PDF Pages to Images for Figures and Presentations
Most of the time you convert files into a PDF, not out of one. But there are common situations in research where you need the reverse โ turning a PDF page into a standalone image file. Journal figure submission portals, presentation slides, and posters often want a PNG or JPG, not a PDF page. Here's when you need this, what settings actually matter, and why the output sometimes comes out blurry.
Why You'd Convert a PDF Page to an Image
- Figure submission portals โ many journals require each figure as a separate TIFF, PNG or JPG file, not embedded inside a manuscript PDF
- Presentation slides โ pasting a "PDF" into PowerPoint often doesn't work directly; converting the relevant page to an image first guarantees it displays correctly
- Posters โ poster design software (and print shops) generally expect image files, not multi-page PDFs
- Extracting a single figure from a paper you scanned or received as a PDF, to reuse in your own notes or a review (only where copyright/licensing permits)
The Setting That Actually Matters: Resolution (DPI)
A PDF page has no fixed pixel dimensions โ it's a vector description of the page. When you convert it to an image, you choose a resolution, and that choice determines the final pixel dimensions and file quality.
For example, a standard 8.5-inch-wide page converted at 300 DPI produces an image 2550 pixels wide. The same page at 72 DPI (a common web default) produces only 612 pixels wide โ noticeably blurry once placed in a figure or printed.

Resizing a low-resolution image up in PowerPoint or Photoshop does not add real detail back in โ it just stretches existing pixels, making blur worse, not better. Always convert at the target DPI in the first place rather than upscaling afterward.
PNG vs JPG โ Which to Choose
For scientific figures, plots, and line diagrams, PNG is almost always the better choice. PNG uses lossless compression, so text, axis labels, and sharp lines stay crisp. JPG uses lossy compression optimized for photographs, which introduces visible artifacts ("JPG ghosting") around sharp edges and small text โ a real problem for gel images, chromatograms, and any figure with fine detail.

Multi-Page PDFs โ What Happens to Each Page

If you only need one specific figure, extract just that page's content rather than converting the whole document and discarding the rest.
Checking the Result Before You Submit
Before uploading a converted image to a journal portal, zoom in to 100% (not fit-to-screen) and check text labels and fine lines are still legible. A figure that looks fine shrunk down to fit your screen can reveal blur or artifacts once viewed at actual size โ which is exactly how a reviewer or copyeditor will see it.
