Preparing a Buffer at the Right pH — What the Calculator Handles For You
Buffer preparation looks simple on paper — weigh out the acid and conjugate base, dissolve, adjust pH — but getting it right consistently depends on understanding what's actually happening chemically, not just following steps by rote.
The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation
This equation relates a buffer's pH to the ratio of its conjugate base [A⁻] to its weak acid [HA]. When the two are in equal concentration, pH equals pKa exactly — this is why choosing a buffer system with a pKa close to your target pH matters so much.
Why pKa proximity matters
A buffer resists pH change most effectively within about ±1 pH unit of its pKa. Choosing a buffer system whose pKa is far from your target pH means you'll need an extreme, lopsided ratio of acid to base to hit that pH — and the resulting buffer will have poor capacity to resist further pH changes, defeating the purpose of buffering at all.

Common preparation mistakes
- Adjusting pH with strong acid/base after mixing instead of calculating the correct acid:base ratio upfront — this works but changes your buffer's total ionic strength and final buffer species ratio in ways the calculation didn't account for
- Measuring pH at the wrong temperature — pH meters are temperature-sensitive, and pKa itself shifts somewhat with temperature; calibrate and measure at the temperature you'll actually use the buffer at
- Using the wrong pKa for a polyprotic acid — phosphate buffer, for example, has three different pKa values; using the wrong one gives a buffer that doesn't behave as expected
