Pre-Submission Checklists — What Actually Gets Missed
Most desk rejections and reviewer complaints aren't about the science — they're about avoidable formatting, completeness, and consistency issues that a careful pre-submission check would have caught.
What actually gets missed
- Figure/table numbers not matching in-text references — especially after reordering during revision
- Inconsistent terminology — switching between two names for the same thing (e.g., "control group" vs "reference group") without noticing
- Citations in the text with no matching reference list entry, or vice versa
- Author names/affiliations inconsistent between the manuscript, cover letter, and submission portal
- Statistical values that don't match between the text, tables, and figures (a value updated in one place but not another during revision)
- Journal-specific formatting requirements — word count limits, reference style, required sections — not fully checked against the specific target journal
Why these slip through
These errors almost never happen because someone didn't know better — they happen because a document gets revised many times, and small inconsistencies accumulate across drafts faster than any one read-through catches. A dedicated final check, ideally with a checklist rather than a general re-read, catches what a normal proofread misses.
💡 Check figures and tables last, separately
Do one pass specifically for figure/table numbering and in-text references, separate from a general readability pass — these errors are easy to miss when you're reading for content and flow at the same time.
