A "motivation letter" is a term used more commonly outside the US, especially for European graduate programs, fellowships, and some international opportunities — and while it overlaps with a cover letter or statement of purpose, it has its own conventions worth knowing.
What a motivation letter typically covers
- Why this specific program or opportunity — concretely, not generically
- Your relevant background — briefly, since your CV covers this in detail separately
- Your motivation — genuinely, why this matters to you specifically, which is where the format gets its name
- What you bring, and what you hope to gain — a two-way fit, not just what the program offers you
How it differs from a US-style cover letter or SOP
Motivation letters, especially for European programs, often expect a more direct, sometimes more personal tone than the polished, achievement-focused style common in US application essays. Some programs provide fairly specific formatting or length guidance (sometimes surprisingly short, like half a page) — always follow the specific program's stated requirements rather than assuming US conventions apply.
⚠️ Check the exact word or page limit. Motivation letters for European programs are sometimes shorter than the equivalent US personal statement — padding to a US-typical length when a program asks for half a page can work against you.
