How to Prepare a Thesis Defense Presentation
Your defense talk is not a shortened thesis. It is a focused argument that you understand your field, answered a real question, and can judge the limits of your own work. The committee has usually read the thesis or will question you on it, so the talk should orient them, not repeat every chapter.
Build the talk around your aims
Organise the main body by research aim or question, not by chapter order. For each aim give the question, the approach in one or two slides, the key result, and what it means. This keeps the logic visible and gives the committee an easy way to ask follow-up questions.
A workable shape
- Opening: the problem and why it matters, in a minute or two.
- Gap and aims: what was unknown and what you set out to do.
- One block per aim: method, main result, interpretation.
- Integration: how the aims fit together and what the thesis adds overall.
- Limitations and future work: stated by you, honestly and briefly.
- Conclusion: the contribution in two or three sentences.
Budget the time
Confirm the rules. Programmes differ on talk length, whether questions are separate, and who attends. Ask your supervisor or graduate office.
Give most time to results. Background and methods should be just enough for the committee to judge the results.
Keep spare slides. Put extra data, controls and method details in a backup section at the end, ready for questions.
Rehearse with an audience. A lab mate who interrupts like a committee member is worth several silent run-throughs.
Prepare for the questions
Expect questions on your choices (why this method, why this model), the weak points of your data, what you would do differently, and how your work relates to other studies. Write down the ten hardest questions you can think of and rehearse short, honest answers. "I did not test that, but here is how I would" is a good answer; guessing is not.
💡 Defend your decisions, not just your results
For every major method choice, be able to say in one sentence why you made it and what its main limitation is. Committees often probe reasoning more than numbers.
