Abstract word limits across major journals
Every journal specifies an abstract word limit. Exceeding it is a common cause of desk rejection β many submission systems reject manuscripts automatically if the abstract exceeds the limit. Word count conventions vary significantly: Nature allows 150 words, Science just 125, while PLOS ONE allows 350 and some clinical journals permit 400. Funder lay summaries have their own strict limits (Wellcome Trust: 100 words).
How journals count words
Most journals count words as space-separated tokens. Hyphenated words (well-being, dose-response) are usually counted as one word. Numbers and abbreviations count as one word each. Some journals count structured abstract section headers (Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions) toward the total β always check the specific author guidelines. This tool uses space-separated word counting, which matches the most common journal convention.
Writing concisely within limits
If over the limit: cut background to a single sentence, convert "were found to be" to "were", remove hedge phrases like "it is important to note that", and use numerals (5) instead of words (five). Target a reading age appropriate for your audience β overly complex abstracts score lower on discoverability metrics in database search rankings.
