Most journals require that every abbreviation be defined on its first use in both the abstract and the main text independently, since many readers read only the abstract. Undefined abbreviations are one of the most frequently cited minor issues in peer review. This tool scans your text for all-caps abbreviations and uses AI to expand each one, checking whether it was defined on first use.
The abstract and main text are treated as independent documents for abbreviation purposes. An abbreviation defined in the abstract must be redefined at first use in the main text, and vice versa. Some journals also require abbreviations to be redefined at first use in each figure legend, since figure legends are often read independently of the main text.
Abbreviate only terms used three or more times in the text. A term used twice is clearer written out in full both times than introduced as an abbreviation. Avoid inventing new abbreviations for terms that don't have a widely used one — this burdens the reader without saving meaningful space. Never abbreviate in a title or section heading.
