Generate a professional cover letter for postdoc, faculty and academic research position applications.
An academic cover letter for a faculty or postdoc position accompanies your CV and research statement. It is not a summary of your CV โ it is a narrative that connects your research trajectory to the position and makes the case for why you are the right person at the right stage of your career for this specific role.
Opening paragraph: position name, your current role, and a two-sentence summary of your research focus. Research paragraph(s): your past work, current projects, and future research agenda โ specifically how it complements or extends the department's existing strengths. Teaching paragraph (for faculty positions): your teaching philosophy and experience, tailored to the department's needs. Closing: expression of interest, mention of enclosed materials, contact information.
Name two or three faculty members whose work is adjacent to yours and explain why collaboration would be productive. Reference the department's specific strengths, facilities, or student population. Generic academic cover letters โ even well-written ones โ are significantly less persuasive than letters that demonstrate genuine knowledge of the institution.
