Reference a specific recent paper, product, or project from the group rather than a generic mission-statement summary — it shows you actually looked, not just that you searched their name.

4. Behavioral

Tell me about a time an experiment failed and how you responded.

Pick a real failure, state what you initially assumed the cause was, what you actually found on investigation, and what changed afterward. Interviewers are evaluating your diagnostic process, not judging you for the failure itself.

Describe a disagreement with a supervisor or collaborator.

Focus on how the disagreement was resolved through evidence or discussion, not on being right — a good answer shows you can hold a scientific position while still working productively with someone who disagrees.

5. Future Direction & Independence

Where do you see your research in 5 years?

Connect your past work to a plausible next direction, staying specific enough to sound genuine but flexible enough to fit the role you're interviewing for — avoid a rehearsed answer that ignores the actual position.

How would you pursue funding or resources for your own project?

Show awareness of realistic funding routes relevant to the role — internal seed funding, external grants, or industry partnership — rather than a vague answer about "applying for grants."
