Write a compelling essay for scholarship and fellowship applications.
Scholarship essays are evaluated by committees who read hundreds of applications. The deciding factor between equally qualified candidates is almost always the quality of the writing and the specificity of the narrative. A scholarship essay is not a list of achievements — it is a story about who you are, what drives you, and what you will do with the support.
The most common reason strong candidates are rejected is failing to answer the question asked. Read the prompt three times. Underline the key terms. If the question asks about "a challenge you overcame", the essay must be about overcoming a challenge — not about your research interests with a brief mention of a challenge at the end. Admissions committees evaluate whether candidates can follow instructions.
Scholarship committees fund people who will do something with the money. Be specific about your plans: not "I hope to contribute to science" but "I plan to complete my PhD in structural biology focused on antibiotic resistance mechanisms, followed by a postdoc developing novel β-lactamase inhibitors for clinical translation." Specificity signals both ambition and a realistic plan.
