The statement of purpose (SOP) is the most important written component of a graduate school application. It tells the admissions committee who you are, why you want to do research, why you want to do it at their institution specifically, and why they should admit you over other qualified candidates. Most programmes expect 500โ1000 words, though limits vary.
Open with a specific hook โ a research question, an experience, or a moment that defines your intellectual interest. Do not open with "I have always been fascinated byโฆ". Follow with your academic and research background, your specific research interests and why they matter, why this programme and two or three specific faculty members whose work aligns with yours, and a brief forward-looking statement about your research goals after the degree.
Writing a generic SOP and submitting it to multiple programmes with only the institution name changed. Admissions committees read hundreds of SOPs and recognise generic text immediately. The paragraphs about specific faculty, recent lab publications, and why this programme suits your research goals must be genuinely customised for each application.
