Different academic disciplines use different citation systems. Psychology, education, and social sciences use APA (7th edition). Humanities use MLA or Chicago. Medical and health sciences use Vancouver (numbered). Law uses Bluebook. Each system has specific rules for author order, punctuation, italics, and digital identifiers. APA 7th edition key rules
Authors in "Surname, Initial." format. Year in parentheses. Article title in sentence case (only first word and proper nouns capitalised). Journal name in italics, title case. DOI as a full hyperlink. Example: Smith, J. A., & Lee, B. (2023). Effects of X on Y. Journal of Science, 45(3), 112–125. https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxxx
Vancouver numbered style
Vancouver uses superscript numbers in text, ordered by first citation. In the reference list: Smith JA, Lee B. Effects of X on Y. J Sci. 2023;45(3):112-25. doi:10.xxxx/xxxxx. Note the abbreviated journal name (use NLM abbreviation), no italics, and semicolons between volume and issue. Always include the DOI — it is mandatory in most current Vancouver style guides.
