Frequently asked questions

What size should a passport photo be?

It depends on the country. Many countries use 35 × 45 mm, the US uses 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), and some use other sizes. Check the official requirements for your application. This tool lets you enter any width and height in pixels, mm, cm or inches, so it works for any country.

How do I reduce a photo to under 50 KB or 100 KB?

Enter your limit in "Max file size (KB)" and choose JPG or WebP. The tool lowers the quality step by step and keeps the highest quality that fits. If the file is still too large at the lowest quality, make the pixel size smaller.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The photo is opened and edited inside your browser, and nothing is sent to Scitero or anyone else. Closing the page discards it.

Can this tool remove or change the background?

No. It can fill padding or transparent areas with a colour, but it does not cut a person out of their background. For a plain white background, take the photo against a white wall in even light.

What does DPI mean, and what should I use?

DPI links pixels to printed size. 300 DPI is the usual choice for printing, so 35 × 45 mm is about 413 × 531 pixels. For online uploads that only ask for pixels or KB, DPI does not matter.

How do I print several passport photos on one sheet?

Open "Print sheet", choose your paper, and the tool places as many copies as fit, or the number you choose. Download it as a JPG or PDF and print at 100% scale (actual size).

Will resizing a small photo make it sharper?

No. Enlarging a small photo cannot add detail, so it will look soft. Start from the largest, sharpest photo you have, and reduce it rather than enlarge it.

About this tool

How it works: your photo is rotated, cropped, resized with high-quality smoothing, adjusted and then saved by your browser. File size is controlled by searching for the highest JPG or WebP quality that stays under your limit. The chosen DPI is written into JPG and PNG files so print programs show the right size.

⚠️ Photo rules differ by country and by application. The head-position guide is only approximate. Always check the official requirements (size, background, head size, expression) before you submit or print.

Free passport photo maker and image resizer

Applications for passports, visas, ID cards, exams and scholarships often ask for a photo of an exact size, in a set file format, and under a size limit such as 50 KB or 200 KB. This tool lets you resize a photo to the exact width and height you need, crop it to the right shape, brighten it, and compress it to a target file size, all in your browser and without uploading anything.

Resize in pixels, mm, cm or inches

Enter the size in the unit your form uses. For printing, set the DPI (300 is typical) so the pixel size matches the physical size. You can keep the original proportions to simply make a picture smaller or larger, or crop to a fixed shape such as 35 × 45 mm.

Make a photo smaller in KB

Set a maximum file size and the tool finds the best JPG or WebP quality that fits. If you are preparing a photo for a portal, this saves the trial and error of re-saving it again and again. For more on photos and documents, see our guide: how to prepare a passport photo at home.

Print several copies on one sheet

Place as many copies as fit on A4, A5, Letter, 4 × 6 inch or 5 × 7 inch paper, then download a JPG or PDF to print at a local shop or at home.
