Choosing keywords for maximum research discoverability
Keywords drive how your paper is found in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Well-chosen keywords connect your paper with the right readers — including researchers who might never have found it from the title alone. Most journals allow 5–8 keywords. Biomedical journals often specifically request MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms.
What to include in a keyword set
A balanced set typically covers: (1) your primary subject area, (2) your specific methodology if distinctive, (3) your primary outcome or finding, (4) your study population if specific, and (5) one or two broader context terms for adjacent researchers. Avoid repeating words already in your title — search engines index both, and repetition wastes keyword slots.
