Choosing keywords for maximum research discoverability
Keywords drive how your paper is found in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Well-chosen keywords connect your paper with the right readers โ including researchers who might never have found it from the title alone. Most journals allow 5โ8 keywords. Biomedical journals often specifically request MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms.
What to include in a keyword set
A balanced set typically covers: (1) your primary subject area, (2) your specific methodology if distinctive, (3) your primary outcome or finding, (4) your study population if specific, and (5) one or two broader context terms for adjacent researchers. Avoid repeating words already in your title โ search engines index both, and repetition wastes keyword slots.
MeSH terms for biomedical research
MEDLINE/PubMed uses MeSH controlled vocabulary to index papers regardless of the exact wording authors use. If your keywords match MeSH terms exactly, your paper appears in MeSH-based searches even if your title uses different wording. Use the NLM MeSH browser at meshb.nlm.nih.gov to verify whether your terms map to controlled vocabulary entries.
