Responding to peer reviewer comments: structure and tone
The reviewer response letter (rebuttal letter) is submitted with a revised manuscript. A well-written response is often as important as the revision itself โ editors read it to assess whether you've engaged seriously with the feedback. The structure is simple: copy each comment, respond to it, and state what change was made in the manuscript and where.
Responding to comments you agree with
Acknowledge the point directly: "We thank the reviewer for this insightful comment. We agree that our methods section lacked clarity on this point. We have revised lines 145โ152 to explain the rationale for our sample size selection." Always specify exactly where in the manuscript the change appears (line numbers, section name, or table/figure number).
Disagreeing respectfully
It is legitimate to disagree if you have a well-reasoned argument. Frame it as: "We respectfully disagree with this point because [reason + evidence]. We have added a sentence in the Discussion (lines 210โ213) acknowledging this alternative interpretation." Never dismiss a comment even if it misunderstood your work โ if a peer reviewer misunderstood, other readers will too, and clarification is always worthwhile.
