Adding page numbers to PDF documents

Page numbers are required for thesis submission, grant applications, manuscript revision cycles (reviewer comments reference page numbers), and formal reports. This tool adds customisable page numbers to any PDF in your browser โ€” choose position (top or bottom, left, centre, right), font size, starting number, and whether to skip the first page (useful for cover pages).

Thesis and dissertation requirements

Most universities specify exact formatting for thesis page numbers: Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) for preliminary pages (abstract, acknowledgements, contents), Arabic numerals starting from 1 at the Introduction. The first page of each chapter is sometimes not numbered but counted. Check your institution's thesis formatting guide carefully before adding page numbers, as corrections after binding are expensive.

Adding page numbers for peer review

When submitting a revised manuscript, reviewers' comments reference specific page and line numbers. Adding page numbers to your submission PDF (and line numbers in Word before converting) makes revision much faster for both reviewers and yourself. Some journals require this explicitly; even those that don't benefit from it during the editorial process.
