Extracting text from a PDF
This tool reads the actual text layer embedded in a PDF and reconstructs it as plain, editable text — useful for pulling a quote into your notes, copying a passage for review, or getting a paper's content into a word processor for annotation. It works well on PDFs created directly from a word processor or typeset by a journal, since those embed real, selectable text. It cannot extract text from a scanned image of a page (a photograph or scan with no underlying text layer) — those require optical character recognition (OCR), which this tool does not currently perform. If the extracted text looks like garbled characters or is empty, the source PDF is very likely an image-only scan rather than a text-based document.
